Creating Connections Challenge

Shared Goals

In this video for Days 7 and 8 of the challenge, Dr. Jackson focuses on the concept of shared goals and introduces the idea of a superordinate goal from organizational psychology. A superordinate goal is a large, overarching objective that requires the cooperation of many individuals to achieve.

Homework:

Days 7 & 8 Assignment

For the next two days, your challenge is to reflect on your team's goals and get real feedback on your alignment. Here are the steps to complete the assignment:

  • Identify the Superordinate Goal: Before discussing it with anyone else, define what you believe the main goal of your current team is.

  • Align Your Individual Goals: Articulate exactly how your personal value system and your specific, individual goals plug into that larger team goal.

  • Share and Seek Feedback: Share your reflections with your team to see if they agree with your assessment of the team's goal and your role within it. Alternatively, ask your team members to share their perspectives with you to see how everything aligns.

  • Report Back: Share your feedback on how the conversation went. You are encouraged to create a video or audio recording documenting your experience and what you learned from the exercise.
