True North Challenge

Your Deep Why

Welcome to the Skillful Habits Challenge! We are kicking things off by ditching the idea of "willpower." Willpower is a battery that eventually runs out. What we need is a generator—a source of energy that renews itself. Today, Dr. William walks you through the "5 Whys" technique to anchor your new habit in a deep, personal value, so you don't have to force it.

Homework:

The 5 Whys.

"Here is an example. Let's say your habit is 'Taking a 5-minute break.'

  • Ask Why? 'To reduce stress.' (Okay, that’s good, but let’s go deeper.)
  • Ask Why? 'So I’m not exhausted at 5:00 PM.'
  • Ask Why? 'So I don’t snap at my partner or kids when I get home.'
  • Ask Why? 'Because I want my home to be a place of peace, not stress.'

Ask Why? 'Because being a loving, present family member is who I truly want to be.'
